What If Your Air Conditioner Ran on Sunshine?
The sun heats up your home. Why not put that same sunshine to work helping cool it? Our solar-powered air conditioners take electricity from solar panels and use it to run your cooling system, giving you another way to power your comfort instead of relying entirely on the grid. Whether you want to cool a bedroom, a garage, a workshop or multiple rooms, the idea is the same: match the right air conditioner with a properly sized solar array and use the sunlight available at your property. A cloudy sky does not mean your solar panels stop working. Sunlight can still reach the panels through cloud cover. How much electricity they produce depends on how cloudy it is: thin or scattered clouds are different from thick, dark overcast skies. As you can see in our video, our 1-ton mini split is running with three 450W panels on a cloudy day in Phoenix, Arizona. That system normally comes with five panels; space on our van limited us to three. It is a real-world example of our solar cooling system operating without a perfectly clear sky. The important point is that clouds do not automatically stop solar production—or stop your AC from running. Available solar power and the amount of cooling you need determine how much of the load solar can cover. We still size each installation for its space and conditions, rather than recommending three panels for every home.
